What age can I start driving lessons?

Most people start their driving journey when they turn 17, however, you're never too old to learn!
If you're eligible for the enhanced rate of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you can start at 16!

Do I need any driving experience before my first lesson?

No experience is needed at all. Your instructor will guide you step by step from the basics.

What happens in my very first driving lesson?

On your first lesson, your instructor will drive you to a suitable practice area, where they can introduce the following:

Introduction of basic car controls
Moving off and stopping safely 
Basic steering and road awareness
Lessons start at a pace that suits you

How long is a driving lesson?

Weekly lessons are 2 hours long. 
A standard intensive course is 20 hours, however these can vary in length from 10 to 30 hours depending upon your needs.

How many lessons will I need to pass my driving test?

Everyone is different. On average, learners need:
40 hours of professional lessons
Plus 20–25 hours of private practice
It can vary between automatic and manual lessons

Can I choose manual or automatic lessons?

Yes. You can learn in either a manual or automatic car.
Automatic lessons can be simpler and quicker for some learners.

What should I bring to my first lesson?

This is completely normal. Our driving instructors are trained to help nervous learners feel relaxed and confident.

I am Neurodivergent, can I have driving lessons?

You absolutely can! All instructors have experience working with neurodivergent pupils, we also have instructors who have a NCFE Level 2 certificate in understanding Autism / ADHD.

Can I practise driving privately alongside lessons?

Yes, as long as:
You’re insured on the car
You’re supervised by someone over 21
They’ve held a full licence for 3+ years

How soon can I book my theory test?

We strongly encourage you to have completed your theory test before commencing lessons.
You can book your theory test as soon as you receive your provisional licence.

Do I need to pass my theory before practical lessons?

Accepted Answer

No. You can start lessons before passing your theory, but you must pass it before being able to book your practical test.

What if I need to cancel my lesson?

At U Drive, we require a minimum of 48 hours notice to cancel or rearrange a lesson.
Unfortunately any lessons cancelled beyond this time frame will be 100% chargeable.

How do I know when I’m ready for my driving test?

As you get ready, your instructor will advise / help you book your driving test. To do so, you need to be able to demonstrate the following:
Drive independently and safely without prompts, on a variety of road conditions
You show consistency in your lessons and avoid serious/dangerous faults
You are able to manage your nerves whilst completing a Mock test with your instructor.
